POSITION SUMMARY:
Operates equipment/performs physical laboring activities in the maintenance of roadway, roadside, right of way, shoulder, tunnels and ERC facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  1. Operate light-duty maintenance equipment (pick-up, dump truck, crash cushion truck, cone truck).
  2. Use a wide variety of roadway maintenance tools (chain saw, concrete saw, portable generator, air compressor, jack hammer, etc.).
  3. Perform preventive maintenance on light-duty equipment under direction of supervisor and/or Maintenance Foreman.
  4. Perform manual labor, as directed, in accordance with appropriate safety requirements.
  5. When performing roadway maintenance, checks to determine if other, unassigned work in the immediate area, needs attention and proactively responds to the need; reports the same to Maintenance Foreman.
  6. Perform routine and emergency roadway maintenance work, as directed within established time frames.
  7. Install, maintain, and remove various types of roadway lane closures (mobile and static) under the direction of Maintenance Foreman.
  8. Perform roadside and facility landscaping work, such as clearing weeds and brush, and planting and trimming.
  9. Assigned vehicle(s) kept in good working condition, fueled up at end of work day, tools removed, and cleanliness of vehicle maintained; perform preventative maintenance as required.
  10. 100% of all recordkeeping, documentation, reports, etc. submitted in accurate, readable format by due date. Communicate any foreseeable difficulty in meeting this requirement to Maintenance Foreman directly.
  11. Perform Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Vehicle Inspection on assigned equipment.
  12. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
  13. 100% compliance with MUTCD and Virginia Work Area Protection Manual
  14. Perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all laws governing vehicle operation; maintain safe driving record with zero preventable accidents
  15. Perform all other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of related work experience, preferably in highway maintenance, or highway construction or an equivalent combination of education and/or related experience.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  2. Experience performing manual labor
  3. Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications.
  4. Ability to perform preventative maintenance on assigned equipment
  5. Ability to operate light and medium highway maintenance equipment is preferred
  6. Valid Virginia Driver’s License; Commercial Driver’s License preferred
  7. Knowledge of the MUTCD and VWAPM is preferred
  8. Experience performing various types of lane closures/traffic control is preferred
  9. Must be at least 18 years old
  10. Ability to obtain a VDOT Security Clearance
  11. Ability to pass a Criminal History Background Check and drug screen
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to exert moderately heavy (up to 50 pounds) physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing highly skilled movements such as operating heavy equipment.
  • Acute Hearing: able to perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear at not less than 5 feet with or without the use of a hearing aid or, if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard (formerly ASA Standard) Z24.5—1951.
  • Average Visual Abilities: Must have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70° in the horizontal Meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.
  • Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex, and rapid adjustments including, but not limited to; sander, motor grader, dump truck, tractor, front end loader, drill press, welder, common hand and power tools, welder/cutting torch, chain saw, weed trimmer, hydraulic jacks, shovel, ax, rakes, brooms, and forks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This job is performed primarily outdoors.  Exposure to loud noises, dust, dirt, heat, sparks, oil and smoke is possible.  Working in and around high traffic volumes is also likely during roadway maintenance and/or emergency response situations.  Work may be performed in a variety of climate conditions, including but not limited to severe cold, and extreme heat. 
He/she must be able to navigate the jobsite and is expected to be able to comply with all safety regulations in on the jobsite.
