POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for the prompt repair and ongoing maintenance of roadway, roadside, right of way, shoulder, tunnels and ERC facilities. Assures safe operation of maintenance activities and equipment usage. Maintains grounds.

Assumes responsibility for the efficient and effective performance of maintenance activities and equipment usage.
  1. Operates light-duty maintenance equipment (pick-up, dump truck, crash cushion truck, cone truck).
  2. Uses a wide variety of roadway maintenance tools (chain saw, concrete saw, portable generator, air compressor, jack hammer, etc.)
  3. Performs routine and emergency roadway maintenance work, as directed within established time frames.
  4. Installs, maintains, and removes various types of roadway lane closures (mobile and static) under the direction of Maintenance Foreman.
  5. Performs roadside and facility landscaping work, such as clearing weeds and brush, and planting and trimming.
  6. Assist in keeping the vehicles in good working condition, fueled up at end of work day, tools removed, and cleanliness of vehicle maintained; perform preventative maintenance as required.
  7. Perform Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Vehicle Inspection on assigned equipment.
  8. Operate snow equipment to include snow plow, spreader, and snow blower.
  9. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
  10. 100% compliance with MUTCD and Virginia Work Area Protection Manual
  11. Perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all laws governing vehicle operation; maintain safe
  12. driving record with zero preventable accidents.
  13. Perform all other duties assigned.
Assist with the completion of related maintenance recordkeeping and administration.
  1. Assist with updating the maintenance history logs.
  2. Ensures an adequate inventory of necessary spare parts and materials is maintained.
Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication and coordination with Company personnel and with management.
  1. Assists maintenance personnel as needed. Communicates regularly with maintenance personnel to ensure that maintenance activities are completed as per the maintenance schedule.
  2. Keeps management informed of areas activities and of significant concerns. Reports major concerns or significant problems.
  3. Attends meetings as required
Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
  1. Assists in moving materials, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  2. Performs building maintenance functions as needed.
  3. Ensures work area is clean, secure and well maintained.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS
  1. Assigned maintenance duties are performed with minimal disruption to maintenance schedules.
  2. Preventive maintenance is performed according to schedule.
  3. Assist with maintaining records and logs are. Equipment is appropriately maintained and is used according to the established safety standards, operating instructions and standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
  4. Good communication and coordination is maintained with maintenance personnel and management. Assistance and support are provided as needed. Management is appropriately informed.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be at least 18 years old. Requires completion of a high school diploma, general education degree (GED). At least one year of related work experience or
an equivalent combination of education and/or related experience.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. Experience performing manual labor
  2. Ability to work well independently.
  3. Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications.
  4. Ability to operate light and medium highway maintenance equipment is preferred.
  5. Valid Virginia Drivers’ License; Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
  6. Knowledge of the MUTCD and VWAPM is preferred
  7. Experience performing various types of lane closures/traffic control is preferred.
  8. Ability to obtain a VDOT Security Clearance
  9. Ability to pass Criminal History Background Check and drug screen.
  10. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  11. Ability to work a flexible schedule to include dayshift, nightshift, weekends and extended hours.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION:
  1. Climbing: Including ladders, scaffolding, ramps, poles, etc.
  2. Balancing: May involve walking, standing, and/or crouching on narrow, slippery or moving surfaces.
  3. Kneeling: Resting on knee or knees
  4. Crouching: Bending downward and forward at the leg and spine.
  5. Stooping: Bending downward and forward at the waist. Requires full use of lower extremities and back muscles.
  6. Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  7. Standing: For extended time periods.
  8. Walking: Especially for long distances.
  9. Pushing: Using upper body to press against something with steady force.
  10. Pulling: Using upper body to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects.
  11. Lifting: Use of upper body and back muscles to lift objects.
  12. Finger dexterity: Using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.
  13. Grasping: Using fingers and palm on an object.
  14. Feeling: Perceiving sensual characteristics of objects including size, shape, texture, temperature, etc. through touch.
  15. Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  16. Repetitive motions: Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  17. Acute Hearing: able to perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear at not less than 5 feet with or without the use of a hearing aid or, if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard (formerly ASA Standard) Z24.5—1951.
  18. Average Visual Abilities: Must have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70° in the horizontal Meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.
  19. Physical Strength: Exerting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or 10 lbs. regularly.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Worker is subject to varying inside and/or outside temperatures, which may include extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees) or extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees). Work is performed both inside and outside. Subject to weather.
  2. Must work in a very noisy environment, which requires workers to shout to communicate.
  3. The worker is subject to significant vibration.
  4. Must work under hazardous conditions including high places, inclined platforms/surfaces, chemical exposures, electrical current, moving machinery, exposure to blood, etc.
  5. The worker is subject to fumes odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc., which affect the skin or respiratory system. Must be able to wear a tight-fitting facepiece respirator.
  6. Frequent local travel.
MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Reasoning ability: Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization. Ablr to interpret various instructions.
  2. Language ability: Ability to use a passive vocabulary of 5,000-6,000 words; read at a slow rate; and define unfamiliar words in dictionaries for meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. Ability to write complex sentences, using proper punctuation, and using adjectives and adverbs. Ability to communicate in complex sentences, using normal word order with present and past tenses and good vocabulary.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. The position location is subject to change according to the needs of the organization.
