POSITION SUMMARY:
$17.00 hourly rate
Supports operational functions for the Downtown/Midtown Tunnels under the general supervision of the Traffic Management Field Supervisor or other supervisory/management-level positions within the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:POSITION SUMMARY:
$17.00 hourly rate
Supports operational functions for the Downtown/Midtown Tunnels under the general supervision of the Traffic Management Field Supervisor or other supervisory/management-level positions within the organization.

- Perform field tasks associated with directing and controlling traffic in a safe and professional manner using appropriate traffic control techniques (hand signals, whistle, voice, etc.).
- Maintain inspection logs, forms, and reports, submit to Supervisor
- Observe and report all unusual occurrences.
- Remain alert, attentive and highly visible while on station.
- Monitor and inspect vehicles for compliance with applicable regulations.
- Assist Law Enforcement personnel, fire & rescue units, and maintenance personnel as needed in emergencies and routine operations.
- Provide security to the facility.
- Maintain professional demeanor and uniform appearance.
- Use sound judgment and appropriate safety techniques to prevent unauthorized persons and vehicles from entering tunnel.
- Provide Control Room with up-to-date information regarding incidents/accidents and personnel/equipment needed.
- Keep assigned Inspection Station clean and orderly.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all laws governing vehicle operation; maintain safe driving record with zero preventable accidents.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of work experience, preferably in a customer service, security, or related function. Prior experience directing and controlling traffic is also preferred.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
- Effective oral and written communications
- Ability to interact with motorists by answering questions, providing directions and instructions.
- Ability to work under pressure
- Ability to remain calm and professional during routine and emergency situations
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Ability to obtain a VDOT Security Clearance
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License
- Ability to pass a Criminal History Background Check and drug screen
This job is performed in at an Inspection Station and/or outdoors and requires frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, and reaching.
Some heavy lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 35 lbs of force may be required.
- Acute Hearing: able to perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear at not less than 5 feet with or without the use of a hearing aid or, if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard (formerly ASA Standard) Z24.5—1951.
- Average Visual Abilities: Must have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70° in the horizontal Meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This job is performed primarily indoors but will frequently require working outdoors. Exposure to loud noises, dust, dirt, heat, sparks, oil and smoke is possible. Working in and around high traffic volumes is also likely during emergency response situations. Work may be performed in a variety of climate conditions, including but not limited to severe cold, and extreme heat.
He/she must be able to navigate the jobsite and is expected to be able to comply with all safety regulations in on the jobsite.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
